What Happens at a First Physiotherapy Appointment

What Happens at a First Physiotherapy Appointment

A first physiotherapy appointment is mostly conversation and movement, and less hands-on treatment than people expect. That surprises some people, so it is worth explaining why.

Start With the Conversation

The appointment starts with what brought you in: when it started, what makes it worse, what you have already tried, and what you need to get back to. A lot of that last part matters more than it sounds. Getting back to lifting a toddler is a different goal from getting back to a half marathon, and the plan is different too.

The Movement Assessment

Then comes the assessment. Your physiotherapist will watch you move, test strength and range through the area, and check the joints above and below it. Where a problem shows up and where it comes from are often different places, which is why a knee assessment usually involves looking at the hip and ankle.

Your Plan and Next Steps

From there you will get an explanation of what they think is going on, in plain terms, and what the plan looks like. Most people leave with two or three exercises rather than a long list, because a short plan you actually do beats a long one you abandon by Thursday.

What to Bring

Bring shorts or clothing you can move in, and anything relevant from another provider: imaging reports, a specialist letter, a previous exercise plan. If you have insurance coverage, bring the details so the front desk can check what applies before you leave.
